Château du Fréchou

Many regions in France have their ‘secret’ destinations - smaller, privately-owned historic properties with beautiful gardens and authentic furnished interiors - and the Château du Fréchou is one of them.

Tucked away in a small Gascon village between Nérac and Condom, the Château du Fréchou has panoramic views of the beautiful Vallée de l’Osse. Dating from 1250, this venerable chateau forms part of one of the most admired groups of buildings in the region.

A Renaissance Gatehouse leads to Italianate Gardens with yew topiary, an historic Orangery and a romantic Dovecote; a C14th Gothic Bridge leads to a Jardin Clos. The medieval and Renaissance interiors contain C17th and C18th antiques and works of art.

The Château formerly belonged to Baron François de Laugnac, instigator of the most famous political assassination in French history. This was the murder in 1588 of the powerful Catholic Duc de Guise, first cousin to Mary Queen of Scots.

The Château du Fréchou welcomes you for historic visits, romantic stays and memorable receptions.

Visits

Entering the Château gardens from the village through the 16th century gatehouse, you enter another world steeped in history and charm.

You will discover the Italian Garden in front of the Château, reminiscent of Tuscany with its terrace and Orangery, and sweeping views over the Gascon countryside, the “secret” Closed Garden of medieval inspiration, a early medieval Motte with the remains of a C11th tower and one of the most beautiful Dovecotes in Gascony - probably a medieval watchtower at its origins, a mysterious “Chapel”  - likely to have been an entrance to the Château, and a very romantic medieval Gothic Bridge.

The guided tour inside will take you around a Guards Room complete with Prison, an ancient Kitchen, a Postern with its defensive Bretêche, a grand Renaissance Staircase, the Great Medieval Hall, a C14th Tower and the inhabited Private Apartment.
